MILDURA’S SOCIAL HOUSING WAITING LIST REACHES AN ALL-TIME HIGH AS FAMILIES WAIT LONGER TO BE HOUSED.

  • MILDURA’S PRIORITY WAITING LIST MORE THAN TRIPLES (UP 261%)
  • MILDURA’S TOTAL WAITING LIST SOARS TO 708 FAMILIES
  • ANOTHER 16 FAMILIES JOIN THE WAITING LIST IN SEPT 2021 QUARTER

The Liberal Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell has slammed the Andrews Labor Governments social housing record, saying recent data showed more Mildura families are waiting longer for access to social housing as the waiting list grows and the waiting time gets longer.

Ms Lovell said the September Waiting List data released last week revealed that the list of vulnerable families languishing on Labor’s Social Housing Waiting list in Mildura had reached an all-time high of 708 families, an increase of 284 or 66.98% since the election of the Andrews Labor Government.

Of even greater concern is the escalating number of families on the ‘priority housing list’ which has more than tripled under Labor, increasing by 261 families to reach a total of 361 families.

Priority applicants include the most vulnerable community members including those who are homeless, at risk of homelessness, escaping domestic violence or living with a disability or special housing need.

Ms Lovell said the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing’s Annual Report revealed that the wait time for access to housing for those on the ‘priority list’ has extended from 8.7 months in June 2014 to 12.4 months in June 2021. That’s an additional 3.7 months before vulnerable families are housed – an increase in waiting time of 43%.

In September the Andrews Government trumpeted it would invest in 2,352 new social housing properties across Victoria but not a single one of these homes was to be built in Mildura. This will leave 708 vulnerable Mildura families languishing on Labor’s ever-growing waiting list.

Comments attributable to Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell:

“The Andrews Labor Government has failed vulnerable families in Mildua through its failure to address the growing need for social housing.

“It is unacceptable that the number of families urgently waiting for priority housing has more than tripled to reach 361 families under this government.

“The government must do more to address this growing need for social housing in Mildura.”
