The social housing shortage in Mildura is set to continue despite the Andrews Labor Government’s spin.
Over the term of the Andrews Labor Government the waiting list for Social Housing in Mildura has skyrocketed to reach a total of 692 families. This is a figure that has blown out by an incredible 268 families (63.2%%) over the term of this government, including an extra 16 families who joined the list in the June 2021 quarter.
Of greatest concern are the 367 families on the priority access waiting list which includes those who are homeless, escaping domestic violence, living with a mental illness or disability, indigenous families and those with special housing needs. This list has blown out by an extra 267 families (267%) over the term of this government, including an extra 10 families who joined the list in the June 2021 quarter.
Last week Housing Minister Richard Wynne boasted Labor would invest in 2,352 new social housing homes across Victoria but not a single home will be built in Mildura. This will leave 692 local families, including 367 of the most vulnerable families languishing on Labor’s ever-growing waiting list.
Labor clearly has a problem with numbers as the homes it intends to build will not even begin to scratch the surface of the 51,823 additional social housing properties needed to house families already on the state-wide waiting list and will not assist a single family in Mildura.
Comments attributable to Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell:
“The Andrews Labor Government has failed to adequately invest in social housing which has seen the waiting list in Mildura skyrocket by 63.21% to reach 692 families under Labor and the government’s recent state-wide announcement favours other areas while failing to provide a single house in Mildura.
“Mildura families who are languishing on Labor’s ever-growing waiting lists are under enormous stress and the government must provide far greater assistance to address the needs of vulnerable families in the Mildura community”
