The Liberal Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell has labelled the decision of the Andrews Labor Government to shut down State Parliament for the next six weeks as an “utter disgrace”.
With the 2020 sitting schedule of the Victorian Parliament already severely reduced to only 16 days due to COVID-19 restrictions, Ms Lovell said it was incredulous the Labor Party, with the support from several crossbench members, had moved to avoid the scrutiny that comes with the sitting of the parliament.
Ms Lovell said that it was extremely disappointing that three of the five members of the Northern Victoria region, Labor members Jaclyn Symes and Mark Gepp and Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party member Tania Maxwell had all voted with the Government’s motion, that will now not see the parliament resume until 4 August.
Ms Lovell commended the Member for Shepparton Suzanna Sheed and Member for Mildura Ali Cupper for voting with the Liberal Party in the Legislative Assembly to support the return of parliament on 30 June.
In her contribution in State Parliament, Ms Lovell slammed Labor stating; “You argue that you want to take holidays: ‘Oh, let’s all take the school holidays off’. Well, I tell you what: the people who have lost their jobs would love the opportunity to work through those school holidays, because they have no livelihood coming into their home.”
With the stench of corruption permeating through the Andrews Labor Government, Ms Lovell said the decision was all about Daniel Andrews avoiding the public scrutiny that he deserves, and she believed the parliament should return in two weeks.
Comments attributable to Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell:
“The arrogance of the Andrews Labor Government in shutting down State Parliament for the next six weeks is literally breathtaking, all to avoid scrutiny now that there are IBAC and police investigations into alleged corruption within the Labor Party.
“With 199,000 Victorian’s losing their jobs since March, Daniel Andrews wants to take a holiday rather than work to help those doing it tough.
“While I commend Suzanna Sheed and Ali Cupper for voting with the Liberal Party to return parliament in two weeks’ time, Northern Victoria members Jaclyn Symes, Mark Gepp and Tania Maxwell should hang their heads in shame for supporting the government with this decision.
“Their collective actions are a slap in the face to the constituents they claim to represent.”
