The Liberal Member for Northern Victoria Region Wendy Lovell has called on the Andrews Labor Government to investigate safety concerns at the intersection of the Midland Highway and Central Avenue in Shepparton East.
In a constituency question to the Minister for Roads and Road Safety Ben Carroll in State Parliament, Ms Lovell called for the Minister to order a safety audit and commit funding for an upgrade to improve safety at the intersection.
The intersection carries a large volume of vehicles each day, including many heavy vehicles and Central Avenue is used to access nearby sporting facilities and a kindergarten.
In her contribution, Ms Lovell said the intersection had experienced numerous vehicle collisions over the years, including a multi-injury collision in February involving a bus and a station wagon.
Ms Lovell said many concerns about the intersection had been raised by locals with her office, including the lack of warning for motorists on Central Avenue as they approach the Midland Hwy.
Ms Lovell said her constituents had offered suggestions on safety upgrades at the intersection including the installation of more rumble strips on Central Ave and for the intersection to be off set for Central Avenue traffic.
Comments attributable to Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell:
“The Midland Hwy Central Avenue intersection has been the scene of many serious collisions over the years and motorists have warned of the dangers experienced at the intersection.
“To improve safety for all motorists, including many families driving to the nearby taekwondo centre, football club and kindergarten, I call on Minister Carroll to take action and make the intersection safer for all road users.”
