The Liberal Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell has sought from the Andrews Labor Government a commitment to provide funding to construct a new fence to improve security at the Mooroopna Fire Station.
Speaking during an adjournment debate in State Parliament, Ms Lovell highlighted the current lack of security for Mooroopna CFA volunteers and called on the Minister for Emergency Services Lisa Neville to fund construction of the new fence around the carpark of the fire station.
The proposed project would include a security fence with a single pedestrian gate and sliding automated vehicle access gate, constructed to the same standard as the security fence at the entrance to the Shepparton Fire Station. It is estimated that for the fence and gate to meet CFA Health and Safety obligations, the project would cost approximately $50,000.
The Mooroopna Fire Station has been subjected to a number of concerning incidents requiring police attendance in the past 18 months and there is an ongoing concern for member’s safety, particularly when members respond to a call-out late at night.
In her contribution, Ms Lovell pointed out that as the matter is a safety and security issue for CFA members, the project should not be subject to a grant application nor should the brigade be expected to fund the construction themselves.
Comments attributable to Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell:
“The volunteers at the Mooroopna Fire Station do a wonderful job but they currently work in a station that provides them no personal security or secure parking for their vehicles.
“This is particularly disturbing for members responding to a call-out, considering the number of concerning incidents that have occurred at the station in the last 18 months.
“That is why I have asked the Minister to commit funding for the construction of a secure fence around the carpark of the Mooroopna Fire Brigade consisting of a single pedestrian gate and sliding automated vehicle access gate, to the same standard as the security fence at the Shepparton station.”
