The Liberal Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell has called for a major funding investment by the Andrews Labor Government that will see the duplication of the A300 Midland Highway from Epsom to the township of Huntly.
Speaking during the adjournment debate in State Parliament recently, Ms Lovell sought action from the Minister for Roads and Road Safety Ben Carroll to provide funding to duplicate the highway from Howard Street in Epsom to Waratah Road in Huntly.
Ms Lovell said the Midland Highway interchanges between a two-lane to a four-lane carriageway through the city centre but becomes a permanent two-lane carriageway, one lane in each direction, at the Howard Street intersection through the suburbs of Epsom and White Hills.
This intersection had been the scene of many collisions over the years, including one in July that left three people injured and another in February when two young children were injured.
In her contribution, Ms Lovell highlighted the urgent need for a safety upgrade of the Howard Street intersection, which is the main thoroughfare for traffic travelling to the nearby Epsom Primary School and Village Epsom Shopping Centre.
Ms Lovell said the ever-increasing commercial and residential development to Bendigo’s north meant the current two-laned Midland Hwy north of Howard St struggles with congestion and called on Mr Carroll to fund the 5.7km duplication to tackle the issue and improve safety for motorists.
Comments attributable to Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell:
“The continued growth to the northern outskirts of Bendigo through to Huntly means that now is the time to upgrade the road infrastructure of the Midland Highway.
“The duplication of the Midland Highway from Howard Street to the Huntly township has been advocated for by the community for many years, yet Labor have failed to improve congestion and safety on this very busy road.
“I urge the Minister to upgrade safety at the Howard Street intersection and provide the funding to make the duplication of the Midland Hwy from Howard St to Waratah Rd in Huntly a reality.”
