The Liberal Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell has called on the Andrews Labor Government to take action to expand the access of natural gas to all households and business in the townships of Nathalia and Barmah in order to minimise the impost caused by banning firewood collection in the region
All the households in Barmah and many in Nathalia are currently forced to rely on firewood collection as the primary source of heating for their homes during the winter months because they do not have access to natural gas.
The ban on collecting firewood in the Barmah area, imposed by Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio, has forced residents to endure a three-hour round trip to gather the wood they need.
Ms Lovell has written to Ms D’Ambrosio in her role as Minister for Energy asking her to take action to expand the natural gas supply so it can be accessed by all residents in both Barmah and Nathalia.
Comments attributable to Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell:
“The Andrews Labor Government has imposed this firewood collection ban on the Barmah and Nathalia communities, where many residents are without access to natural gas to heat their homes.
“As she is responsible for banning firewood collection in the Barmah region, I call on Ms D’Ambrosio in her role of Energy Minister to ensure the natural gas network is expanded and available to all Barmah and Nathalia residents who want it.”
