The Liberal Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell has again sought action to improve safety at the Kialla West Primary School crossing, located on the Goulburn Valley Highway.
In a constituency question in State Parliament to the Minister for Roads and Road Safety Ben Carroll, Ms Lovell requested details of plans to upgrade safety at the dangerous crossing, nearly 2½ years after a devasting collision at the site involving a young school family.
The family’s vehicle was stationary at the crossing during pick-up time when it was struck from behind by a truck travelling at 80km/h. The physical injuries and emotional scars caused by this horrific collision remain for this family to this day and in the minds of the entire school community.
Since the September 2018 collision, Ms Lovell has repeatedly called on the Andrews Labor Government to develop and fund safety upgrades at the crossing to help prevent another tragic incident occurring at the school.
Comments attributable to Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell:
“This tragic collision 2½ years ago devastated the lives of a local family and remains in the conscience of the entire Kialla West Primary School community.
“Being on a major highway, the crossing remains dangerously unsafe, yet the Andrews Labor Government still refuses to provide a plan to upgrade the dangerous crossing and commit funding to complete the works.
“The long summer school break was the perfect opportunity for the works to occur and once again it is disappointing the government didn’t use the opportunity to make the safety improvements needed.
“Motorists, the school community and particularly the family involved deserve better and I again urge the Minister to get to work and improve safety at the crossing.”
