With the second anniversary of the horrific collision at the Kialla West Primary School crossing fast approaching, the Liberal Member for Northern Victoria Region Wendy Lovell has called on the Andrews Labor Government to provide an update on plans to upgrade the dangerous crossing and commit funding to complete the works.
In a letter to Minister for Roads and Road Safety Ben Carroll, Ms Lovell pointed out that since the collision, the school and wider communities have been waiting for details on substantial safety upgrades at the crossing and requested he make an urgent funding allocation to get the works completed.
Ms Lovell has continuously sought safety improvements at the crossing after the horrific crash at the site during end-of-school pickup in September 2018, when a school family sitting in their vehicle at the crossing was rear ended by a truck travelling at 80km/h. In March, Ms Lovell was informed by former Minister for Roads and Road Safety Jaala Pulford that Regional Roads Victoria were assisting Greater Shepparton City Council in the planning of a pedestrian underpass at the school.
Comments attributable to Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell:
“With the second anniversary of this terrible collision fast approaching the physical and emotional scars from the collision remain and Regional Roads Victoria owe it to the family involved in the collision and the wider community to fund an upgrade to this dangerous crossing.
“The Andrews Labor Government has had two years to work with Greater Shepparton City Council to come up with a plan that will make both students and motorists safer but as yet no details have been released or funding allocated to the project.
“It is time the Government released their plans and the Minister provide an urgent funding commitment to get the safety upgrades completed.”
