The Liberal Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell says the last-minute announcement of funding to extend the management of fruit fly in the Sunraysia region will ensure crucial work will continue to protect our vital fruit industry for the next 12 months.
Ms Lovell said that she was pleased her constant advocacy for State Government funding to help fight fruit fly in regional Victoria had led to a one-year extension of funding for ‘Greater Sunraysia Pest Free Area Committee’, as part of the ‘Managing Fruit Fly in Victoria Action Plan’.
The funding will see $511,900 allocated to Mildura Rural City Council to implement a regional action plan for 2020-21 that will continue to protect the region’s precious horticultural sector.
Ms Lovell said the funding will allow ‘Greater Sunraysia Pest Free Area’ to continue their vital work and she was pleased to have assisted in the continued protection of the region’s fruit export industry and ensure the future for local growers.
Comments attributable to Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell:
“With funding for the ‘Managing Fruit Fly in Victoria Action Plan Project’ ending on 30 June, there was a genuine fear that the State Government had walked away from protecting Sunraysia fruit from this destructive pest.
“Finally, Jaclyn Symes has agreed with me of the importance of protecting our local produce and the announced funding will extend the work of ‘Greater Sunraysia Pest Free Area’ for another 12 months, providing comfort and assurance for the entire fruit growing industry throughout the Sunraysia region.”
