The Liberal Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell has pushed the Andrews Government to prioritise the construction of a full diamond interchange at the intersection of Watson St and the Hume Freeway at Wallan East.
In an adjournment debate in State Parliament, Ms Lovell called on the Minister for Roads, Road Safety and the TAC Jaala Pulford to elevate the project to the State’s list of priority projects and provide the State Government’s share of funding for the project.
Elevating the project to Victoria’s priority projects list will ensure it can be considered for funding from the Federal Government. The funding would consist of a 50:50 split between the State and federal governments and the total estimated cost of the project is approximately $135 million.
The project will see the construction of southern orientated Hume Freeway on/off ramps to exit and enter Watson St at the intersection to allow Wallan residents, tourists, businesses, and commuters direct access on and off the Hume Freeway when travelling to and from Melbourne.
Prior to the last State Budget in May, Mitchell Shire Council asked the State Government to accelerate this project as an immediate priority for consideration by the Federal Government but this request was ignored by the Andrews Labor Government.
Comments attributable to Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell:
“The Watson St/Hume Fwy diamond interchange at Wallan East is vital to meet traffic infrastructure needs in the Northern Growth Corridor, one of the fastest growing areas in Victoria.
“I call on the Minister to elevate the project to the State’s priority projects list for funding consideration by the Federal Government and also provide a commitment for the State Government’s share of funding for the project.”
