The Liberal Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell has slammed the Andrews Labor Government for walking away from the Shepparton Bypass project.
Ms Lovell’s anger stems from a response she has received from Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan on the progression of the project, in which the Minister placed the sole responsibility on the Federal Government to deliver the bypass, wiping her hands of the project.
Ms Lovell said the Minister’s response smacked of more political game playing, considering the Federal Government has already committed funding of $208 million for the project.
Ms Lovell said State Labor have shown little interest in the Shepparton Bypass project, delayed the business case by nearly two years, and now appear to have walked away from providing any funding for the project.
It has always been reported that funding for the Shepparton Bypass would be delivered in an 80/20 split between the Federal and State Governments.
Jacinta Allan’s response is deeply concerning as the State are the level of Government responsible for the planning and construction of the project and for contributing the minor share of the funding.
Without a commitment from the state to prioritise the bypass for construction the project won’t proceed regardless of how much money the Federal Government commits to the project.
Ms Lovell said the Andrews Labor Government’s continued failure to commit any funding to the Shepparton Bypass showed they have walked away from delivering the project that has been identified by Greater Shepparton City Council and the wider community as the highest priority project for the region.
Comments attributable to Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell:
“Jacinta Allan’s latest comments passing the buck to the Federal Government are a slap in the face for the entire Shepparton community and show Labor has wiped their hands of the project, with no intention to provide their funding contribution.
“The Andrews Labor Government has had four consecutive State Budgets to commit funding for the Shepparton Bypass but has failed to commit a single cent to this vital infrastructure project.”
