The Liberal Member for Northern Victoria Region Wendy Lovell has once again slammed the Andrews Labor Government’s inaction on the Shepparton Bypass project. During an adjournment debate in State Parliament directed to Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan, Ms Lovell called for the release of the business case for the project and a funding commitment in the upcoming 2020/21 State Budget to get Stage 1 of the project underway.
Stage 1 of the Shepparton bypass project will see the construction of 10km of road from the Midland Hwy west of the Mooroopna township to Echuca – Mooroopna Rd then crossing the river to connect to Wanganui Rd and the Goulburn Valley Hwy on the north side of Shepparton. As well as reducing the number of heavy vehicles travelling through Shepparton, it will also deliver the long-awaited second river crossing for motorists travelling between Shepparton and Mooroopna.
Ms Lovell said Ms Allan has dragged her feet on funding the project, repeatedly refusing to make public the business case that was due to be released over 18 months ago and that the Goulburn Valley community has waited decades for the bypass to be constructed. She said with the Federal Government having committed $208 million in the 2018/19 Federal Budget for Stage 1, the time had come for the State Government to release the business case and commit their share of funding for the project.
Comments attributable to Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell:
“The entire Goulburn Valley community knows the importance of the Shepparton Bypass project to the region and this is mirrored in the Federal Government’s funding commitment of $208 million towards the cost of Stage 1 of the project. Yet all we have from Jacinta Allan is excuse after excuse and a business case she refuses to release to the public.
“The recent Federal Government funding of $320 million for Shepparton rail should free up State infrastructure funding that the Minister should redirect in the upcoming State Budget as the State’s share of the bypass.”
