LOVELL CHAMPIONS GREATER SHEPPARTON AS THE HOME FOR VIC’S NEW REGIONAL AIR FREIGHT PORT

Greater Shepparton should be the home of the state’s new regional freight airport, according to Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell.
In Parliament on Wednesday Ms Lovell threw her support behind the notion, which is gaining traction at a local level.
Ms Lovell first spoke in Parliament on the idea of establishing an inland airfreight port in Greater Shepparton 18 months ago, calling on the Labor Government to commit proceeds from the Port of Melbourne lease to the project.
“Unfortunately, at that time the response I got from Labor was nothing more than dispassionate disinterest,” Ms Lovell said.
“I’m hopeful that the renewed industry push in recent weeks will convince the government that an air freight port in Greater Shepparton – which would service industry within a 300km radius – has local backing and is of merit, and I am supporting this push.”
Recent media reports have said that the Victorian Government is in early discussion about establishing a new freight airport, to be located in northern Victoria, and that there are several provincial airports being scoped for rapid expansion to create Victoria’s third large airport.
“Greater Shepparton would be the ideal choice,” Ms Lovell said.
“Not only is Greater Shepparton City Council currently considering a new greenfield site for the Shepparton airport, but the region houses Victoria’s premier food bowl for fresh produce with at least 25 per cent of our state’s export produce coming from the Goulburn Valley.
“An air freight port in Greater Shepparton would allow the export of our product directly from our growing region in to Asia, for example, and would be of significant benefit to our fresh produce exports by saving the need for produce to be transported to the Melbourne airports and docks for export.
“Now is the time for innovative and progressive commitment from the government, to realise the potential and numerous benefits in decentralising produce and other exports from the metropolitan region.
“This is a very solid idea and the government owes Greater Shepparton to give it strong consideration and any appropriate support.”
