The Liberal Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell has called on the Andrews Labor Government to immediately allow the re-opening of regional Victorian gymnasiums and dance studios.
Speaking during the adjournment debate in State Parliament on Tuesday, Ms Lovell said that the easing of restrictions in regional Victoria from the current lockdown did not go far enough and asked Acting Premier James Merlino to immediately lift the restrictions on gyms and dance studios in country areas who are again facing financial devastation.
In her contribution, Ms Lovell said she had been contacted by many owners of gyms and dance studios throughout her electorate who are once again doing it tough despite not a single positive COVID case being recorded in regional Victoria during this current outbreak.
The impact for businesses on the NSW border is even more devastating because of the ridiculous scenario of a gym in Barooga being open and accessible to Victorian border residents under the border bubble arrangements while a gym in Cobram is unable to operate.
Ms Lovell said that border towns are one community and closing a gym on the Victorian side while a gym on the NSW side is operating is pointless with people accessing the NSW facilities still living in and moving around Victorian communities.
Comments attributable to Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell:
“The Andrews Labor Government continues to fail Victorians with its obsession of imposing blanket lockdowns across the entire State and are unable to comprehend the enormous physical, emotional, and financial devastation it creates with every day of a lockdown.
“Both gymnasiums and dance studios have previously shown that they can operate safely by following strict cleaning and hygiene practices and I urge the Acting Premier to immediately open these businesses located in regional Victoria.”
