LOVELL CALLS FOR LOCAL INVESTMENT IN SOCIAL HOUSING AS BENALLA AND WANGARATTA’S WAITING LIST GROWS AGAIN

  • 80% MORE HOMES NEEDED IN BENALLA AND WANGARATTA TO HOUSE 781 FAMILIES ON WAITING LIST

  • BENALLA/WANGARATTA WAITING LIST UP 70.52% WITH ANOTHER 38 FAMILIES JOINING THE TOTAL WAITING LIST IN SEPT 2020 QUARTER

  • BENALLA/WANGARATTA PRIORITY WAIT LIST MORE THAN TRIPLES UNDER LABOR (UP 218.85%) WITH 20 MORE FAMILIES JOINING THE PRIORITY WAIT LIST IN SEPT 2020 QTR

The Liberal Member Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell has called on the State Government to ensure Benalla and Wangaratta receives a major share of the social housing being funded in the upcoming State Budget to address the concerning rise in families languishing on the Andrew’s Labor Government’s ever-growing Social Housing Waiting list.

Ms Lovell highlighted the issue in Parliament last week and is calling on the State Government to look beyond the tramlines and address the significant growth in disadvantaged families in regional areas.

Following Ms Lovell’s speech in Parliament calling for a major investment in social housing in this year’s state budget she was initially excited by the government’s announcement today (Sunday 15th Nov.), however that excitement soon turned to disappointment when the Minister stated that only 25% of the housing would be built in regional Victoria – despite regional Victoria making up 37% of the total number of families languishing on the priority waiting list and 34% of the total waiting list.

Benalla and Wangaratta’s social housing waiting list has increased by 70.52% since the election of the Andrews Labor Government, soaring from 458 families in September 2014 to 781 in September 2020.

Ms Lovell said new data for the September 2020 quarter recently released by the government revealed the waiting list for social housing in Benalla and Wangaratta continued to increase with another 38 families joining Labor’s lengthening queue for social housing in the September 2020 quarter.

Since the Andrews Labor Government was elected in 2014 the total waiting list for Benalla and Wangaratta has risen by 323 families (70.52%). There are now 781 families on the waiting list for social housing in Benalla and Wangaratta up from 743 (June 2020) and 458 (Sept 2014).

Of even greater concern was the large increase in priority applicants. There are now 389 families on the waiting list for priority housing in Benalla and Wangaratta, an increase of 20 (5.42%) in the September 2020 quarter and a massive increase of 267 families (218.85%) since September 2014.

Priority applicants are the most vulnerable Victorians who are homeless, at risk of homelessness, escaping family violence or have a disability or special housing need.

Ms Lovell said the social housing waiting list continued to rise due to Labor’s incompetence. The state-wide social housing waiting list has blown out by 2,831 families (6.20%) in the September quarter and an incredible 13,911 families (40.18%) since September 2014 leaving 48,529 vulnerable Victorian families without access to social housing.

Even more concerning are the 25,827 vulnerable families on the state-wide priority housing waiting list, which grew by 1355 families (5.54%) in the September quarter and by 15,837 families (158.53%) over the term of this government.

The latest social housing data available reveals that Labor would need to build 80% more additional social housing homes in Benalla and Wangaratta just to house those already on the current Social Housing Waiting List.

The publicly available data published as part of the DHHS annual reports show that as of June 2019 there were 977 social properties in the Benalla and Wangaratta Local Government Areas, a figure which had increased by only 36 over the five years Labor had been in Government.

However deeper analysis of that data shows that Public Housing (owned by State Government) had decreased by 7 properties during the same period but this had been offset through investment by the community sector in an additional 43 properties, leaving a minor net increase of 36 properties while 781 families languish on the waiting list.

“It’s time for Labor to look beyond the tramlines and it’s time the Minister got on with the job of providing homes for the growing number of vulnerable families in regional Victoria.”
