The Liberal Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell is calling for the State Government to provide funding support for the Goulburn Valley Community Legal Centre (GVCLC) to cope with increasing work demands due to COVID-19.
Ms Lovell said that in the face of the many challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, many people need legal services to help them navigate their options and safety.
GVCLC supports the people of the Goulburn Valley by helping with a wide variety of legal issues including family-violence cases, employment matters, motor vehicle accidents and tenancy and housing matters.
The State Government recently announced $17.5 million in additional funding for frontline legal assistance, yet Ms Lovell said that it is unclear how much GVCLC will receive from this funding pool.
Comments attributable to Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell:
“GVCLC are experiencing an increase in complex family law cases, child protection cases and parenting matters over custody battles since the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Sadly, high tension situations see an increase in family violence, and we need to ensure adequate help is provided for those who need it. That is what GVCLC does.
“Too often country areas are not adequately funded, and I want to ensure GVCLC receive their fair share of the funding.
“Additional funding will help GVCLC do their job to the best of their ability. It will benefit all involved; staff, clients, the community as a whole and the legal system.”
