“Today’s announcement of funding for Fruit Fly control is disappointing and a missed opportunity. While funding is included to continue the work of the three program co-ordinators, it appears funding for the delivery of the program has actually been cut by about half.
“It is also disappointing the Government’s Fruit Fly Strategy 2021-25 is focussed on research and concentrating on exotic fruit fly species rather than the management of the established pest being the Queensland Fruit Fly.
“The Goulburn Murray regional fruit fly program has been extremely successful in managing and reducing Queensland fruit fly numbers across the Goulburn Murray Valley and this funding cut is a slap in the face of horticulturalists across the region.”
