During this Parliament sitting week, Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell called on the Victorian Government to support the Gisborne Cemetery Trust’s request to secure the State Government-owned land adjoining the Gisborne Cemetery.
Ms Lovell said the Gisborne Cemetery Trust has identified that within 20 years the Gisborne Cemetery will require more land to enable it to continue to service the needs of the local community going forwards.
However, if adjoining land is able to be used for the cemetery, the expanded site would be suitable for at least a further 75 years. “The Trust enjoys the support of the Macedon Ranges Shire Council, who believe it would be ideal for the Victorian Government to transfer this land to the Trust to enable the expansion of the Gisborne Cemetery,” Ms Lovell said.
“The Trust is not in a position to purchase the land identified but is instead requesting that the Government gift the land to the Trust.”
Ms Lovell said the land has been identified as surplus to the Victorian Government’s requirements, and was itself originally gifted to the Government in the early 1900s and has asked the government to support the Trust’s request, so that the land can be used to meet the identified community need.
